Educational Software
- Laptops make excellent research tools. They can be
carried to the library with a student, who can use them both to take notes and
generate a finished report. They can still be used to check internet resources
when using wireless ethernet. And they're quiet enough to be allowed.
- Arts and Humanities
- Tux Typing - Touch
typing practice with the Linux mascot, Tux the penguin
- Publishing and design tools as detailed above
- Math
- Dr. Geo - Graphical
geometry learning program
- Octave - Mathematical modeling
clone of Matlab
- GnuCash - Double entry
Accounting software compatible with Quicken
- Science
- XEphem -
Interactive astronomy program
- Computer science and programming language compilers of all types,
including C/C++,
Java, graphical
user interfaces (e.g., windowing, such as
GTK+), and more.
- With the graphing programs and writing tools available in a Linux
system, it becomes easy to write up technical reports including chemistry
labs, physics labs, mathematical proofs, and more.
- We are interested in finding more educational tools to meet your needs and
interests. If there is a particular type of software that you are interested
in, or you know of a Linux educational tool and think we should too, please contact us and ask about that
particular kind of software.
